In a futuristic version of North America, a family from each State is randomly chosen to compete in the annual game show 'Earn or Die. Created by the Leader of the oraganization that runs America, Nico Lavender, the show transports each Player into a completley simulated universe. But when Vina and her family are chosen to compete against forty three other families, she can only hope she survives as her life rests in the hands of America.

They have to try it. No one knows what horrors future Hunger Games may bring, and the desperate rebels are willing to try anything. Meanwhile, in the mountainous regions of District 2, Cato Hadley and Clove Kentwell have trained their whole lives for the Games. Nevertheless, their ambitions change when they, without meaning to, find themselves in the Games together. They are both determined to win. But if they don't, what will happen to them? The brainwashed tributes who land in New York City know nothing of who they are or where they are from. They do not remember Panem, or the Games, or even their own names.
