Rather, she is afraid that everyday objects are somehow different than they seem and that even something as simple as touching a pair of pants could somehow harm her. In order to get herself to handle everyday things, she needs to tap them and mutter "be ok" under her breath. She is about to go off to college and she is terrified that this weird quirk will be discovered.
