Thirty-Eight is captured by a humongous force that is one of the main attractions in a desolate wasteland. Not owning an actual name, he grows accustomed to his number. In the world of Thirty-Eight you fight, or die trying. You cannot "not fight." It's impossible in this land. Can Thirty-Eight stomach the thought of murdering for other's entertainment, or will he be able to survive this facility and eventually escape this hell.

There's not a lot that can freak me out in this world. Only large animals with sharp claws, too many people touching me, bullies, hives, horror movies, sitting underneath fans or lights or anything that dangles from a ceiling, glass or wooden bridges, my mother, mosquitoes, public situations, taking a shower with nobody in the house, taking a shower with too many people in the house and crocks. Oh, and zombies. Zombies is definitely on that list. It's almost a shame too, that I have to race through a city packed full of them to find my missing family. They were once people, but in only seconds, they were changed and given unnatural powers. In order to keep them contained, North America creates an arena, a sort of gladiator battle, imprisoning the Unnaturals there and forcing them to fight to the death. And for the humans out there - make one mistake, and you'll be in there with them. Joel has made that mistake. He was caught unintentionally helping an Unnatural escape.
