In this world, each person is born with a tattooed necklace. Only one other person in the world has the same as you. This person is your necklace soulmate and the person you are supposed to spend the rest of your days with. Yet, there are some groups which are against this idea of a soulmate and decide to be with the person they want, they are called the "rebels".
Jane is a 17 years old teenage girl, living with her parents and her brother Hunter. Jane has already found her necklace soulmate since the age of 14 but when a new boy arrives at her school, she disturbed, he made her feel things she had never felt before and she starts questioning herself, her feelings towards her boyfriend and her future. Even more when she finds out the terrible secret that Shawn reveals to her.

In this society, everyone has a soulmate. And the way to find yours is just look. Along with a soulmate, everyone has a small tattoo on their cheek with a symbol. Some could be a star, a flower, a yinyang, a fish, or even waves. There are so many people that the symbols are almost limitless. The tattoos don't care about gender or number. There could be gay matches, and there could even be polyamorous matches. The tattoos will tingle when you are near to your sm. And they will glow if you have found only one of your sm's if your match was poly. The trick is, you don't get the tattoo until you are 16. And even if you are near your match, as long as one of you are not of age, your tattoo will not tingle. Also, they are normal tattoos (except you don't get it or choose it, it just appears) so you can get rid of it. But if you do, your sm won't die but they will get very sick. The main characters of this story, Violet West (18) and Harper Black (20), both have a flame tattoo on their cheek. They live in the same state but for 4 years Harper paniced because she couldn't find her match. She wasn't sure if it was because her sm wasn't of age yet or if her sm lived far away. For 2 years Violet also paniced but she knew that some people don't find their sm for 5-10 years after they come of age, so she wasn't as scared as Harper.
