Nick hates his parents. His father left him when he was three, pursuing a career in the Soviet Diplomatic Corps. His mother is nuts and quotes the bible whenever she fights with father. Nick is 10 pounds overweight and wants to bleach his face with acid to get rid of the pimple spots. When he is happy, his smile gets girls' attention, but he is not happy very often. When he is happy, it's usually on his BMX bike, far away from kids of his own age.
The year is 1983 and the place is Vienna, a city wedged between the Iron Curtain in the East, and US military bases in West Germany and Italy in the west. Vienna is where Soviet and Western spies earn their spurs. The Main Intelligence Directorate (GRU) of the Red Army alone has 300 undercover operatives, among them a young lieutenant by the name of Vladimir Petin.
