Darkness. Midnight black.
Kalani and I were engulfed in the inky blackness, no escape, no light, no way out.
The heat was coming off us in waves, each heartbeat sent a new ripple out across the chamber, only to bounce back and assault us again.
I felt around for her hand and placed her sweaty palm in mine.
Neither of us dared to speak, it would only kill us faster.
I couldn't see her, but I felt her gaze, looking for me in the darkness.
I knew we were going to die, and she knew that there was no way for both of us to make it out alive.
I smiled to myself, she had always cared. She always took care of me, and I took care of her.
It was time for me to show her my gratitude and help her one last time.
"Kalani..." I croaked, the humidity not helping my craving for water. "I'm sorry."
And then I gave myself up to the darkness.
