The river ends in a forest - and that is all that anyone in the small rural village of Pern has ever needed to know. The river flows down from a mountain and across a glen and then into the gloom of the pine trees - and it doesn't emerge from that darkness again. Ester has lived on the edge of the forest her entire life, hearing the strange footfalls that move over the ground in the night. She has spent her entire life staring into those branches, wondering what could possibly be inside that much feared wood - and where the river ends.
