London, 1775. 

13-year-old Trevor lives as a street-urchin, stealing and pick-pocketing to make a living. Until one night, when he discovers he has a special talent for magic: he is what's called a Shardling. Seeking his fortunes, he enters a new world hidden among ours, called the Tenth Kingdom. He joins the Order of the Shard, a magical law enforcement group, and learns that war and conflict are boiling very near to the surface, thanks to a wraith called Kara. And despite being an outsider, despite being a simple teenager, Trevor feels drawn to this battle, and whatever destiny awaits him, stronger than he's ever felt before.
