Cara Freerose was born and raised alongside the Lightwoods in the New York Institute. Brooklyn was her home and the Lightwoods were her family, until her parents pulled her away from all of that when she was thirteen years old.
They moved to New Orleans to run the Institute there meanwhile distancing themselves further from their daughter as their jobs became more important.
Cara trained as a Shadowhunter in New Orleans as she had in Brooklyn but it wasn't even close to being the same. She missed Isabelle, her parabati, Alec, the only older brother figure she had, and she especially missed Jace. Her and Jace had a loving relationship that passed brother and sister, but Cara wouldn't see him for another five years.

But finally, after almost six years of having nothing but phone calls and letters as a connection between her and her friends, Cara and her parents are moving back to Brooklyn. Her parents are after the job, the position of power, and the money they will make, but all Cara wants is to be reunited with the Lightwoods...and Jace Wayland.

But just as she returns to her home city, Cara's life gets tipped on its side.
Cara battles with her past, present, and future as her and the Lightwoods meet a strange girl names Clary Fray who is supposedly extremely important.
A war opens up in the Shadow world and Brooklyn is the battlefield.
