Sophia Jones is stuck with a family curse. Passed down from her father's side going from grandmother to granddaughter, only to the eldest child. The curse turns you into a mermaid within touch of water. 

With all that said, Grandma Louisa helps adolescent Sophia with her mermaid needs. But she also needs help with the act of lying to those whom she loves, expressing herself without exposing herself and just genuinely having a great life.
