A rapid, strong or  irregular heartbeat due to agitation, exertion or illness. 
Coffee can also cause palpitations that may feel like your heart is racing, as if you cannot seem to control your heartbeat.  But he doesn't experience something like this until he saw her who made his heartbeat uncontrollable.
