This is a Derek centric. When the Hale fire happened, the only Hales left were Laura, Derek, Cora and their Uncle Peter. The four didn't know how to function as a family, they had just lost everyone they ever loved. Derek blamed himself for the destruction of everything they knew and loved. Laura was alpha and Peter was practically dead. What were they supposed to do? This is the journey of how the Hales survived and how Derek dealt with the pain. It's also what Derek did with his man pain.
(I will get to Beacon Hills, it's a bit AUish though because the Hales are all together in this story.)

It's okay. Stiles tells himself so he wouldn't freak out. But in reality it really wasn't. Erica and Boyd are dead. There's a monster in Beacon Hills. Derek is trying to keep everything together but Stiles can see he is suffering. Scott and the rest of the pack are pretending that they aren't terrified but he knows they are. And then to top everything off, Derek and Stiles get kidnapped by the monster and Derek gets hurt... badly. (Set after Season 3 but Stiles never got possessed by the demon, Scott never had to turn Liam and Erica and Boyd didn't die from the alpha pack and Derek is still an alpha).
