Adelaide will be killed if she does not take the test to go to the south side, the better side, of her city. But, it is unknown what this test beholds, and what will happen next if she passes. She doesn't even know if it is a test. All Adelaide knows is this: she yearns to survive, and when it comes down to it, she will do whatever it takes to do so.
