Pierce's father left him and his mother at a young age. His older sister was killed while trying to support the family. By being a prostitute. Pierce and his mother now move from house to house, staying until the landlord kicks them out for not paying rent. This hard life takes a tole on Pierce, so much so, that Pierce begins to develope anger and depression issues. When Pierce finally gets a job, he gets a place of his own as soon as he can.
