Eko Malone, a twelve-year-old boy stuck on an island his entire life, has only known one thing about his parents; they are famous Champions. Nira Malone, a twelve-year-old girl whom one day showed up on Emerald Island with no recollection of her past, only the fear that came from it.
On the cusp of their teens, the pair participate in The Champion's Exam.

Eko determined to become a Champion at all costs, to appease the parents he never knew. While Nira, determined to prove her past fears don't control her, tags along to make sure Eko doesn't kill himself.
With the test underway, the pair meet allies, Zakora with the intent of revenge, Waldo with a quest to be of compassion, and Jackson, a strange child with a questionable past, on a mission to relieve his boredom.

However, the two soon come across the deadliness the trials are truly capable of; the applicants.

Deadly, bloodthirsty, manipulative, ruthless.

Aaron Fable, a man of many mysteries, and man who has an interest in the pair, but is even feared by the Examiners themselves.
