When 12-year-old  Veridia Carter's brother dies in a car accident, the guitar he gave her for her 10th birthday is all she has left to remember him by. While her father drives deep into the state of drinking and her mother is hardly ever home, Veridia tries to live a normal life. As she starts high school, she gets loaded with homework and with nobody to help her with it, she finds her self falling deep into a state of depression. 
One day, she meets a guy who's nothing like the the others she's met in her time at high school. Jai Bradford is sweet, charming and cute.

There's just one catch.

He found her on the ground after being punched in the head.

As Veridia continues to play the guitar and write songs, she struggles with wanting to show Jai them (who she's become very close to) but not wanting him to know her horrible history.
