It's been 40 years since the virus hit the world. There's no official name for the virus, but survivors call it The Insanity. Why? It makes people insane: they lose control of themselves. They murder, hit, rape, hurt and do many more things to those who aren't infected. Within a year, the world we knew was gone. 
15 years later, safe zones were built. Each safe zone represented a state from the Old World and each were fairly large. Buildings and walls were built, resources were made and discovered, transportation made a comeback, housing, schools, jobs, currency. We rebuilt the world. We made the New World. At least, that's how the new history books written in school tell it.

He is a fair but cruel master (calling himself a Lord) and some people refuse to work for him. These people manage to escape the oppression of the Lord and live out on the wasteland that was once a great country. Some band together to make right communities and others rough it out by themselves, scavenging for a living.
