He'd convinced himself after he left that he couldn't have the best of both worlds- it was either the crew or freedom. It was hell to choose, it was torture to walk away from his family- to take estrangement without a fight and just be free. To be able to leave for Italy without worrying if the crew thought him to be dead, to be able to take a job without clearing it with Geoff first.
Freedom was nice, freedom was everything he'd hoped it would be- but it demanded a sacrifice and he'd paid it.
