The people of Panem seem to forget moments like these. All these years before the legend of the star-crossed lovers of District 12, and the rebellion that led to their-our-freedom, there was another Hunger Games. A Games where humanity was thrown aside; and in the pits of darkness, a bond stronger than all others arose. This is the story of the 38th Hunger Games. This is the story of love, and brotherhood-and most importantly, this is a story about family. Witness the long forgotten tale of the burning individuals that set up the ashes for the people of Panem to flame into a wildfire with the Mockingjay. This is the story... of the beginning of the end.

They have to try it. No one knows what horrors future Hunger Games may bring, and the desperate rebels are willing to try anything. Meanwhile, in the mountainous regions of District 2, Cato Hadley and Clove Kentwell have trained their whole lives for the Games. Nevertheless, their ambitions change when they, without meaning to, find themselves in the Games together. They are both determined to win. But if they don't, what will happen to them? The brainwashed tributes who land in New York City know nothing of who they are or where they are from. They do not remember Panem, or the Games, or even their own names.
