"Promise we'll be friends forever, Carl?", Lena asked as she hung upside down from the monkey bars.

Carl smiled as he looked up from the swing. "Forever, Lena. No one or nothing can change that," Carl said to her and jumped from the swing when Mr. and Mrs. Grimes called for him at their car. "Bye, Lena!", he yelled then ran to his parents.

"Bye, Carl!", Lena yelled back then dropped the monkey bars and skipped home, not knowing that was the last time she was going to see her best friend.

Lena Amaris Queen was only 8 when the apocalypse started. She lived in a small farm house with her parents, uncle, two, horses, and younger twin siblings.
