He had made it in case they needed it - It was basically the Black and Red Lion, sharing some of their powers. Lord Zarkon stole it before Caron and Allura could get there, so they venture onto his ship to obtain the Lion..

Only to find out the one it belongs to is a Bounty Hunter. She had already owned the Lion long before they knew - Her name was Jones. She didn't know about this Voltron, all she knew was that her and her Lion would never be separated.

Because they were family.
