Seraphine Moriarty is unique. She has orange brown hair, loves makeup, and can manipulate fire. The people of Jefferson, South Carolina don't like that last bit (not that Sera likes it much either), and have made the last 17 years and 364 days of Sera's life hell through thinly veiled prejudice. The day before she turns 18, Sera decides she's had enough with her hometown and runs away, only to be taken in by a strange old lady named Marina. By no coincidence, Marina too has a power and works at an organization for children and young adults with superpowers in helping them learn to use their powers for good and recover from any abuse or discrimination they may have gone through. Watch Sera learn to control her powers, prepare for the 'real world', make friends with the surprisingly friendly Mikey and Adrian, and have the freedom to learn how to love life and herself, powers and all. But watch out, not everyone is who or what they seem. Alternative title: "X-Men was a metaphor for queer people and the civil rights movement and so is this" by Fall Out Boy -by Panic! At The Disco Apparently people don't take you seriously when you make that your title.

In a freak accident, genetic mutating gas spreads across New York sparing some, killing many, and giving others inhuman abilities. After Emerald (Em) loses her father, her last living family member to The Gas she learns that she gained the power to control fire at the snap of her fingers. Instead of hiding she uses her new found abilities to help people in a society that sees her as the enemy. Jumping from temporary home to home, becoming a part time super-powered crime fighter, and having a secret relationship with her girlfriend Kida in a homophobic city, makes life a mind boggling mess but it's nothing she can't handle ... well that was before someone comes to adopt her.
