Riley Matthews new found popularity has a dark meaning.
A year and a half after one of Riley's suicide attempts, a boy kills himself and the students of Abigail Adams High School Start to grieve asking questions about what drove him to suicide. When Maya Hart, the it girl asks to a friend one day, "I thought he was happy, how could he kill himself?" Riley Matthews is quick to reply, "A way someone is at school isn't always the way someone is at home, would you believe I almost killed myself about two years ago?" Maya Hart takes Riley as her "basket case" friend for sympathy. Riley finally feels wanted and liked, until Lucas Friar comes to town and observes some off things about Riley.
