1920's AU based in NYC during the prohibition era (no relation to any other 1920 SU AU's intended) Lapis is a club performer, half French, half African slave. She plays piano and sings mostly in French, is a respected performer who is in an abusive marriage, secretly homosexual but doesn't understand her sexuality. Peridot, a young NYC girl who poses as a man to get better work. Hides sexuality from everyone. Her friends convince her to go to an underground club with alcohol sneaked in, which is where she meets Lapis.
