~ 2021 WATTY'S SHORTLIST ~ "I-well, I..." I hesitated with my response. I wanted to let go. To not worry about what would happen in the future. I'd always loved staring into fires. It hypnotized me with its beauty and danger. It was so tantalizing to look at, but one little touch could destroy. I knew the heat between Tyler and I was similar. It started off small but it had only grown in the weeks he'd been here. We'd fed it unintentionally, and it had gone from an ember to a crackling flame. Every nerve in my body wanted to reach out and touch it, even though I knew I'd get burned. *************************************************** Pia Callahan always lived a carefree life with no worries. Her only responsibilities were to attend her college classes (sometimes) and keep herself fed (on ramen). When tragedy strikes, Pia is all of the sudden thrown into a whirlwind of change. She has to grow up and take on more responsibility than she could ever imagine: the custody of her best friend's son. Pia may not believe she is the best person for the job, but she is determined to do it. She'll trade in frat parties for PTA meetings and beer-bongs for apple juice. But what happens when the ruggedly hot motocross athlete Tyler Westwood shows up in her small town? Tyler lives on the fast track, never caring too much about consequences. You can't when your job is to do backflips through the air. Sometimes, you just have to send it and hope for the best. From the second Tyler meets Pia, he knows he wants her. But she is determined to ignore their bubbling chemistry. She has priorities now and a summer fling isn't one of them. Will Pia be able to stay away from Tyler? Or will she decide to hit the throttle? ***************************************************

Have you ever been in love with your best friend? Well, I certainly have. I'm the girl from the wrong side of the tracks. The girl who is an illegitimate child. The girl who is a bastard child. In other words, my mom was a club bunny. The girl who could be anyone's child. When I was just a few months old, she left her old life and started a new one in a new town. My mother met an incredible man. A biker. He had his own son who was a little over a year old. We grew up like siblings. He was my father in my eyes. Events happened that made me leave town at 17. I never thought I would come back to this town after I left almost 6 years ago. But, here I am with my almost 5 year old daughter and son. I thought I could hide the truth. I thought he would never find out. But, hey! When you're in a small town, people talk. And so they did. My son is a spitting image of their father. So, when he came barging through my bar and walking out the back door towards my house. I couldn't hide it anymore. Our children were out in the yard playing for fuck's sake. "Is it true?" "Is what true?" "They're mine aren't they?" "I don't know what you're talking about." "He fucking looks like me McKenzie!" "I..." Tears began to fall from my eyes like the raining falling out the sky. There's no point in lying and trying to hide it anymore. "Were you ever going to tell me?" "No." He turned on his heels and stormed off towards his Harley FXDR 114. He never looked back. And I never blamed him. How could I? I destroyed the man I loved since we were children once again. I slumped to the ground in defeat. Tears falling freely down my face. I felt little hands wipe my tears on my stained cheeks. "It's okay mommy. I caught your raindrops."
