Millie, an eleven-year-old girl who lives in the Alola region, has always dreamed of being a pokemon trainer. But her mother believes pokemon are dangerous, and doesn't allow her to become a trainer. Because of this, Millie has no friends, and she's often teased and bullied. She doesn't have any siblings either, and her parents are divorced.
But one day, as she's walking to school, Millie comes across an abandoned Popplio. Her wish ends up coming true, and she embarks on a journey across Alola. However, it's not the pokemon that are dangerous; it's the consequences.

On her fifth birthday, Ben and Jin happily gave her the pokémon egg. The egg had hatched immediately into a Riolu, and Emmaly and Riolu loved each other at once. Peace would not last forever as the Langit family got invaded. Emmaly and her parents were forced to retreat as the two brothers held the invaders off. They were never seen again after that. At age thirteen, Emmaly takes Riolu and runs away from home to start her own journey.
