The crystal gems won the war, and all that is left of the gems from homeworld are Jasper, Lapis, and Peridot.
Steven is the son of pink diamond, a watered down way to preserve her life form from being shattered. No one knows they are there. 
All of the personalities are the same, just different circumstances and Steven's gem is diamond like.

Pearl doesn't realize, though, that she will set off a chain of events that nobody could've predicted, starting with her 'baby' going back to when it all began.
