Si Ylona Braille ang nag-iisang anak na babae ng pinuno ng kanilang isla. Ito ang isla ng mga Mago. Ang kanilang pinuno na si Praseo ang pinakamalakas na mago sa kanilang isla. Siya rin ang nagtuturo mismo sa mga grupo ng kabataan na gustong palabasin ang kanilang kakayahan. Ngunit sa hindi malamang dahilan, ang kaniyang unica hija at bunsong anak na si Ylona ay walang taglay na kakayahan. Lahat ng kaniyang apat na anak ay may iba't ibang kakayahan, maliban sa bunsong si Ylona. Lahat ng ipinapanganak sa kanilang isla na walang kakayahan ay nagiging manggagaway o kaya naman ay manggagamot. Ngunit inihihiwalay sila at doon pinatitira sa isla ng mga manggagaway. Hindi man gusto ni Praseo na mawalay sa kaniyang bunsong anak ngunit kailangan niyang sundin ang kanilang batas. Wala siyang nagawa kundi patirahin si Ylona sa isla ng mga manggagaway kung saan nakatira ang ina nito na isang magaling na manggagamot.

Ngunit likas na malikhain at malikot si Ylona. Sa kaniyang pagtuklas ng mga iba't ibang gamot at kabal ay aksidenteng nakalikha siya ng lagusan patungo sa mundo ng mga mortal.
