At the bottom of Ulva lies the Holdfast, a crumpled mess of old ships that form the colony’s foundations. Hidden in its dark recesses are items from a time when humans lived on the surface, a time before they were forced to take shelter in the oceans. Calder trawls the mangled ruins in the hope of finding something that will make him rich. A chance encounter means he no longer has to do it alone, now he has a partner, a girl named Trice. The darkness contains more than treasure though, it hides secrets too. When the pair stumble into a gang of slavers and their latest captives, they put their lives on the line to rescue one, but what will their heroics cost them?

Every Dagerstanteen knows Rhylent dislikes humans. In fact, the alien isn't a fan of ninety percent of the other species in the universe. But all that changes when he refuels his spaceship and begrudgingly accepts two slaves. Although it would make more sense to kill these silly creatures, oddly, he cannot bring himself to do it. So... what now? For the last fifty human years, Chasm has been a slave and a laborer for whatever alien owns him. Chasm and his only friend, Norwell, get bought, sold, and trafficked again. Now, stuck in a slave market, Chasm faces that their latest master has decided that they're a waste. Just as Chasm and Norwell are to be incinerated, an ill-tempered Dagerstanteen saves his life. Chasm isn't sure what will happen to him and Norwell, but he can be sure no alien will ever want a human as damaged as him. If Norwell and Chasm can escape the prickly alien who now possesses them, they will be free. That's what he wants, isn't it? To be free?
