Elayne Burgandy was, if anything at all, the daughter of the watchmaker in the tiny town of Hiraeth. Elayne has an ordinary life, and she can't help but wonder if there's anything more out there in the world. Her father gives her a handwatch, one that she cherishes every day. One day, she finds him dead in their home with a note in his hand that reads "south woods." She runs towards the south woods that lead to the large city of Sonder, and she runs into a boy who looks completely different from anyone she's ever met in her town.
