Many moons ago, Johnson Shindlemire embarked on one of the most perilous quests of his life, when he rescued a newborn infant boy from the cold, lifeless cabin where his mother died. That very night, Johnson made a promise to himself that no matter what, no matter the cost, he world raise this boy so that one day he might become a Dark Fighter and carry on the legacy that thousands before him had left. He would vanquish the darkness that dwelled within Churaco-Ronda so that he might earn the honour of the people who inhabited the land.
However, now Seth is the right age to begin his duties as a Dark Fighter's apprentice and Johnson must tell him the truth about who he is and why he had to lie to him for so long. He than tells Seth that his days of living a sheltered life within the walls of King Albert I's castle are over and if he truly desires to live out his long-foretold destiny, he will have to leave his best friend Ana Kemptwell and that life, behind him.
But, when Ana's father King Albert I is suddenly murdered, Seth Shindlemire must take up the task of finding the murderer with the help of his mentor Johnson and a palace servant boy named Lin, who bears a cryptic-looking mark that he himself, does not know why.
Unfortunately, before Seth can figure out who assassinated the late King of Churaco-Ronda, Ana is kidnapped by someone with the initials 'M.A.'. Someone Seth has no such recollection of, but Johnson seems to know all too well...

In this exciting debut to the Dark Fighter's Apprentice Series, mystery, murder and mayhem are about to unleash like never before and it's up to our hero and his wise teacher to save Ana and others from the clutches of an evil that's lying beneath. One that waits forever to take the living and bring them to their death.

**Wattys 2016 Winner!** Fifteen-year-old Emmeline Jefferson doesn't have time away from the Demons. Not a minute to say goodbye to her family, not a moment to wonder "Why me?" Every second she's not possessed is spent begging stranger after stranger for help. But no one believes a sporadic girl who claims Demons have spent more time in her body than she has. No one until she finds Dumaine. Dumaine Chartres's whole life fits in his accordion case, his friends are nonexistent, and this fascinating girl is telling him Demons exist. These things all make perfect sense. What he doesn't understand is why humans have such outrageous issues with murder. Death is natural. If he wasn't supposed to kill anyone, they wouldn't have died. Nobody even noticed the bodies anyway. In return for a break from his internal demons, Dumaine offers Emmeline help, and she's willing to receive it from anyone. Maybe this boy can finally be the keeper she needs. Maybe chasing these Demons can explain why he's so different from everyone else. Maybe this friendship can work. With a wise but demented old man, and enough determination to perturb the Demons, Emmeline and Dumaine concoct a plan to unriddle their lives. The first step is to confront the Demon's creator. But something else seems to have found the creator first. And it only looks like an Angel. Human Spines is part one of a YA dark Urban Fantasy written in a style similar to Tahereh Mafi's Shatter Me and Elana Johnson's Possession. It's the first of a series and told from the viewpoints of Emmeline, Dumaine, and their rambling but wise navigator, Hans. Through a diverse cast, it explores themes of learned distrust, fear of the unknown, and the battle against the evil inside us all, in a way similar to a Studio Ghibli film. Cover by ecclesia-

At age ten, Clarice Stuart is rescued from a potentially traumatizing experience by a mysterious stranger who seems to appear out of nowhere and then disappear just as suddenly. Fifteen years later, on a cold November night on an icy mountain highway as Clarice is on her way to her parents' home for the holidays, a black clad rider on a black motorcycle deliberately strands her on the highway. While Clarice waits for help to arrive, miles away her parents and brother are brutally murdered in their home. At the funeral, a man approaches her and offers his condolences, claiming to be a friend of her brother's. Clarice has a sense of recognition but can't place where she might know him from. As a precaution, three deputies are assigned to watch over Clarice until it can be determined whether or not her family was a target or simply victims of a random attack. Staying at her deceased brother's home, Clarice soon learns that even police protection can't save her from the evil that took her family. When her family's attacker appears and kills the three deputies who were meant to guard her, Clarice is certain she will die as violently as her parents and brother. But standing face to face with the killer, she is shocked to be staring into the face of her recently dead and buried brother. Before he can take her life as well, the black rider appears and saves her from the fate of her family. It is then that she realizes that the black rider is the man from the cemetery - and her guardian from the past. Suddenly she finds herself and her guardian in a deadly, terrifying game of cat and mouse with a killer who won't stay dead. Decide what you're going to do, since you're already inside the labyrinth. Either; you can fly with me, I'll give you the wings of wax and feathers or you can wait here for the death to come. Ah, anyways I promise you no better chance at living, but at least, you'll die a free soul, isn't that better? Don't look at me like that, as if you read more than there is written, as if you can see beyond my face or beneath my eyes...no, stay away, there is no need to come closer. I feel nothing! I don't want to feel anything! Why do you laugh? What's funny? You don't believe I'm a monster? Fine, your problem; don't tell me I didn't warn you before. Leave; run; hide; whatever! Just don't break my walls. It hurts to feel again, it hurts to cool off...I like burning, I like fire, just stay away, stay safe. What have you done to me? You were my ace, my pawn, my weapon, why am I suddenly acting like your shield? Break this charm, break it right now... The last thing I want is to fall in love! Don't forget...not for a moment, that you're Icarus and I am your sun. Stay away, stay safe!"
