Life for Lewis isn't particularly easy. Growing up in Boston in 1950, He must overcome racism, crime, everyday life and a dangerous mafia family. When his dad is suddenly shot and killed in his early childhood due to a gang shootout he vows to become everything his father could not. His values and views come into question when the pressure of providing for his family is dropped onto him. Lewis takes the opportunity to work for his best friend's estranged father as an enforcer but this quickly gets out of hand as he gains the attention and admiration of the organizations bosses. He rapidly climbs the brutal hierarchy and is more and more recognized throughout the organization. The jobs provided become much more dangerous.
