Scarlett Walters has the most unfortunate life of anyone she's ever met. Her best friend doesn't understand her, she's bullied, and her parents' marriage is continually getting rockier and rockier. Scarlett's parents love her older sister, who has the perfect life, but Scarlett is next to nothing to them. All she wants to do is die. She feels continually lost and lonely.

Then there's Greg. He's an average guy with an average life. He's seen Scarlett around school a couple of times, looking lost, lonely and depressed.
