When a Tree Dies follows the story of a young man who returns to his nameless baryo after spending most of his years studying and working in the city. Upon his return, he realizes that everyone in the baryo behaves strangely. This is due to the fact that a twenty-two-foot nameless tree, believed to be a caring and protective deity, unfortunately dies making everyone lose his/her appetite, sanity, and Christmas.
