The Brass Bowl by Louis Joseph Vance
In the sweltering New York summer, Daniel "Mad" Maitland, a wealthy and restless young socialite, returns to his apartment to find a mysterious clue left by an intruder: the silhouette of a woman's hand in the dust. His search for this enigmatic "grey girl" collides with two pressing issues: a lawsuit he is pursuing and a warning that the legendary jewel thief Dan Anisty is targeting his family heirlooms.
Maitland's attempt to secure the jewels leads him directly to the woman, sparking an immediate and dangerous fascination. He soon discovers she is a burglar herself, and their lives become entangled in a high-stakes game of deception and mistaken identity, complicated by the fact that Maitland bears an uncanny resemblance to the notorious Anisty. Thrown together, the charming idler and the clever thief must navigate a world of crime and high society, where nothing is as it seems and every encounter could lead to disaster or unexpected connection.
