Genre: Empathetic Historical Fiction Theme: World War Two / Family History Audience: Young Adult / Adult What makes this story special? The answer is plain and simple...nothing! It is a story that is not unique to any time or place. It is a story that has plagued history well before these events and a sorry tale that continues to prevail as we live and breathe. It is a historical compilation of the oral and written entwined with the possibility of truth. It is the story of the 'Campbell' family and their lives during World War 2. Historically it focuses on the 2/13 Battalion and 2/1 Pioneers and their journey to Tobruk and the birth of the infamous Rats of Tobruk. On an emotional level it explores how the Campbell family dealt with the loss of three sons in less than three years. It is a common story that encapsulates the history of far too many families and in its rawness it could be your family. Have the stories and characters of the story grown in their own legendary status? Has fact given way to fiction? The answer is plain and simple, "I don't know". Held together with possibilities, as the writer I am often unsure where black and white merge to become grey. 'Campbell'- Scottish in its origin, the family crest bears an image of fierce, snarling bore. However, it is not this image that brings meaning to this story but rather its Latin motto 'Ne Obliviscaris '- Never Forget. This is my 'Never Forget'

It was a cold and chilly morning, he could see his breath in the air in a mist. As he walked down a crumbly ruined street he stopped for a quick breather and heard a faint but audible sound. The sound was a rock accidentally knocked over but by what he thought a person or is it the enemy or is it a.... !BANG! The sound of a rifle was audible all around the ruined neighborhood and the only sound that could be heard was the sound of a rifle being reloaded with a fresh new round. Mickhial was staring out his foxhole he had just killed another fascist and pulled out a pocketknife to carve a notch in the butt of the rifle. He didn't feel sick to the stomach over the life he had just took but he felt like, he had at target practice, peace and contentment. He looked up from his notch and noticed 2 figures moving in the distance toward his direction. More fascists. He quickly picked up his rifle aimed and just before he fired he froze something big was coming his way it had tracks.

1941, Africa, The Siege of Tobruk. It was a critical chapter in the North African Campaign during World War II. Fought between the Axis forces, led by General Erwin Rommel, and the Allied forces, mainly consisting of Australian, British, and Indian troops. The siege lasted for nearly eight months, from April 10, 1941, to November 27, 1941. Tobruk, a strategic deep water port town on the coast of Libya, became a focal point due to its importance in controlling supply routes and its proximity to Egypt and the Suez Canal. What follows is a re-telling of this historical event, based on historical events and equipment but with fictional characters. At this early stage in the war we do not get as much recorded information as we do later on, evident from that fact we have such works as "El Alamein to the River Sangro" by Field Marshal, The Viscount Montgomery once he took over command of the British 8th. People may be familiar with the film of Tobruk, of which I have drawn some inspiration from, in a way this is my attempt to make a novella in the style of an old war film. Hopefully reading part as history book and part war film. I do not imagine it will have much luck with anyone outside of the ww2 community, put to those who are interested in similar things, I hope they find it enjoyable. Thank you in advance to any who take the time to read. Photos taken from the Imperial War Museum website as this work is not for profit. i have linked their site for people who wish to see more.
