It was 1958. Elvis' mother had just died. She had been shot through the window by an unknown person. One night, Elvis stayed up because he was too depressed to sleep. He sat in the corner of his room, holding his mother's night gown, crying softly. A window broke and a strange pink gas filled the room and he fell into a deep sleep. Some creatures from another planet climbed in through the broken window and took the unconscious Elvis to a mystical land ruled by an evil queen who plans to destroy the planet and possibly Earth. In the mystical land, Elvis meets a fairy, a mermaid, and a dragon who take him on an exciting journey to try and defeat the queen. However, it's not going to be easy because the queen has many deadly tricks up her sleeves.

This is the first year of a series of diaries kept by my father from 1958 to 1964 (aged 16 to 22). It is published here in unedited form, transcribed from his hand-written notebooks. It's not a great literary achievement, but it is the genuine writing of someone growing up in the fast-changing late 50's and early 60's. As well as a recount of my Dad's life including the last couple of years attending Fettes College (a private school in Edinburgh), it also contains many references to news and events in the UK, and further afield. It may be of interest to anyone wishing to learn about that period in history, and get an idea of a (fairly well-off) teenager's life at that time. If there's sufficient interest, I'll continue to transcribe journal month by month, and publish here.
