Houari Boumediene, born as Mohammed Boukharouba, slowly grew more famous and rose in ranks of the Liberation army in Algeria's fight to gain independence from France. Soon, he was Chief of Staff. After independence, he became the Defense Minister. Due to internal arguments and conflicts between the prominent men of the party, Boumediene decided to take the lead in "correcting the path of the revolution" by deposing the then-president Ahmed Ben Bella. He then ruled as president until his death until 1978, carefully guiding the nation to economic independence and safety and thus, earning the respect of all.
