On a cold February night in 1920, a young woman finds herself attempting suicide, due to the feeling that she does not belong in her family. Anna felt as though no one in her family understood her. She felt as though she was looked down upon for her frequent health issues and hospital visits. One moment she was stepping off of a bridge, only to be saved by an officer. The next moment, she found herself to be a patient at Dalldorf, a mental hospital. She did not remember a thing about her past. Slowly regaining it, she comes up with a master plan to swap fates with a person of higher standing. A person of royalty who was rumoured to have survived her family's execution in 1918.

The Romanov Family was tragically executed in a room, nobody knowing of their cruel fate until it was too late to save them. Well not all of them, their only heir Alexei had survived against all exceptions due to his blood disease, had found him all alone in a world he had to hide from until he got somewhere safe. Later in 1928, he married a woman of a wealthy family while hiding under a false family as well as name, later telling her when he knew it was safe enough. Now in the present era, their descendants live in Mystic Falls unaware of the dangers that lurk within the town soon find themselves in an adventure of life and romance after a boy named Stefan Salvatore moves into town.

Meanwhile, the Bolsheviks have been gaining power, and their secret soldiers are posted everywhere in Moscow. Too many young men are drafted into this secret army, offered only the alternative of death. Things reach a boiling point when the royal family is put under house arrest by the Bolshevik Cheka. Rumors are flying around the palace. There is talk of a "final blow", and Anastasia's whole world is about to be turned upside down.
