In the heart of downtown Toronto, as winter sets in, a high-powered vice president reflects on the pressures of his demanding corporate job. After yet another late night at work, he realizes he has forgotten an important file at the office. As he turns to retrieve it, he is suddenly attacked by a hooded figure-his former manager, whom he fired for embezzlement. In a shocking confrontation, the man stabs him multiple times, leaving him bleeding on the sidewalk as chaos erupts around him. 
In his final moments, he grapples with regret, longing for his family and the life he could have led. Just as darkness envelops him, he hears a strange voice announcing his transfer to another world and bestowing upon him the name "Viktor" and the class of "Monarch."
