No adult came to stop the fight until it was over, and her father took her sister's side. At that moment, L realized the price of self-governance was not what it seemed, and M was fighting an internal battle she had not seen from the outside. L saw that M needed her as much as she needed M. L decided then that no matter what happened, they had to stay friends forever. Until the day came when M finally got the opportunity to hang out with her sister's cooler crowd in a bar downtown, even though they were underage. M said it was a surprise to celebrate her driver's license and drove them all the way there. But when they arrived, L said she did not want to go inside, and M could not forgive her.
