When Emily and her husband move into a mansion on Inwood Hill, she expects a quiet new beginning. The house was once a "reformation home" for troubled women. But the women weren't reformed. They were silenced. As she digs deeper, she begins to see them-glimpses of former performers in feathered headdresses and Vaudeville makeup, dancing between the walls, whispering warnings through the wallpaper. The past isn't haunting her. It's recruiting her. When the glamour and violence of the mansion's hidden history bleed into the present, she must uncover what happened to the women locked here before her... before the house decides she belongs to it too. A dark, atmospheric psychological horror blending feminist revenge, burlesque allure, and the ghosts of Vaudeville. Everything in this house was designed to correct her. But she wasn't built to be corrected.

Jessica is forced to move from Oklahoma to New York after oil is found on her farm and her parents are offered a great deal of money. She has to start over at a new school, and meets a couple of new friends. She also meets an unlikely friend. A mysterious and unruly boy named Robert. Eventually they fall in love, but Robert has to move to California where his father is producing movies. Years later, plus a child and and minus her ex husband, Jessica moves to California in search of change. She finds change alright when she runs into Robert for the first time in 6 years. Both lives complicate as they run into troubles with their families and each other.

Sara stops responding to phone calls and messages abruptly, sending her parents Dr.Kich and Pramila, and boyfriend Kiran into a state of delirium. Dr. Kich calls the police, who commission Balderdash Burphy - The Greatest Law Enforcement Officer - to trace the girl. Nurse M readies an injection for "the incoming" that Dr. Kich tells her about and waits eagerly. Kiran drives on the wrong side of the road and is caught by Balderdash Burphy. Gangaram is injured after a spectacular fall while bowling and is dying to return to the pitch and make up for a poor performance so far. Haragopal, a henpecked husband, vows to come home only after getting his wife a mobile phone - beg, borrow or steal. Where is Sara? And what is keeping her from responding to calls or messages? Does Balderdash Burphy, aided by his lieutenant Chowkilal, smart assistant Cleopatra and his own hunch find her before it is too late? What happens when the lives of every bungling idiot in the locality comes together on a day fate wants to have an easy day at office?

Burphy is in a good mood and is having a profoundly nonsensical conversation with Kiran and Chowkilal when a phone call sends them on yet another wild goose chase. And this time, Burphy can't do it alone and drafts in another whacky character to be, er, another sidekick. Together, can they solve the case? Can they unknot that which needs to be, so the complainant can tie the knot? Will Burphy live up to his reputation as the greatest Law Enforcement Officer?
