The New Reality: Smarter Scams, Same Goal - Today's scams are no longer clumsy emails with bad grammar. Many are AI-personalized, emotionally targeted, and disturbingly convincing-quoting your book, referencing your characters, even mimicking real publishers. Some go further: fake agents, fake film deals, and entire "publishing companies" built with AI-generated staff and cloned branding. The goal hasn't changed: get you to pay.

Initially, writing short stories was a hobby. It started soooooo many years ago in Jr High and continues to be a mix of Supernatural and Science Fiction. It's been quite a while since I wrote and drew one of my comic books, so the likes of Black Wolf and the Human Tank have been on a very long hiatus. Back then the digital age was still a few decades away from being the juggernaut it's become so the notion of publishing was little more than that to me. Now with the emergence of eBooks and self publishing, the dream of publication is quite plausible. The new challenge is the saturation of publications one now has to compete with. With that in mind, I've published these excerpts from my anthology here in Wattpad hoping to stir up some interest. As of now, Oct 2018, I have worked with my editor to complete 3 stories, she is working on the 4th and final. The goal is to publish before end of year, so more to come soon! If you like what you read, kindly vote for the excerpt and provide comment if so inclined. Thanks for the support!

Most book marketing doesn't fail because authors aren't working hard-it fails because they're aiming in the wrong direction. We're told to post constantly, run ads, send emails, and be everywhere at once. It feels productive. But most of it is noise. Visibility alone doesn't create discovery. Here's the breakdown: Visibility without intent is wasted motion. Being seen isn't the same as being searched for. A small, targeted audience beats a large, indifferent one every time. Authors market to other authors. Most promo spaces are echo chambers. Writers don't buy like readers do. If your strategy lives there, you're circulating-not growing. Discovery is misunderstood. Real discovery happens when someone actively searches on platforms like Amazon or Google and finds your book. That's not luck-that's positioning. No clear reason to care. "Check out my book" isn't a value proposition. Readers decide quickly. If the benefit isn't obvious, they move on. Too much push, not enough pull. Constant promotion burns out fast. Strong marketing builds assets-content, search presence, credibility-that keep working over time. No trust signals. With millions of books available, readers rely on reviews, presentation, and consistency. Without them, your message gets ignored. Most books don't fail because they lack quality. They fail because the right reader never finds them. Good marketing isn't louder-it's better positioned. By Marjan, author of The Land Listens and 600 Devils, found on www.marjanbooks.com.

  • What Actually Sells Books Online? by 600Devils

What actually sells books online isn't noise-it's precision. Visibility alone doesn't move copies; alignment does. Books sell when they match real search intent, reach readers directly (not through fragile algorithms), and build trust through reviews, communities, and consistent communication. Email still outperforms social platforms because it reaches people who've already opted in, while social proof and reader ecosystems drive buying decisions more than raw exposure. Add strong packaging, and the difference becomes clear: books that are easy to find, trusted, and positioned correctly will outperform those relying on constant promotion.
