Ah, the woes of feeling different! Set foot in religion, and behold the sayings about the possibility of being damned. The feelings of religiosity, no matter how accepting they're supposed to be, can still be twisted to serve man's wants. But perhaps... it is all authenticity versus silence. After all, the comfort of [un]knowing is better than the possibility of being rejected. (n.b., I mean no harm to religion; this is just my catharsis)
