A psalm of the Past. A frame of time when darkness strangles. Where death would be to have hope. It's the sojourn out of darkness into the light. From hell on earth, to salvation, to hope, to sanctification.

1920s Paris. Arthur is a brilliant but cynical art appraiser who has a secret form of synesthesia-he can see the intense, glowing colors of a person's emotions when he looks at them. He is hired to authenticate a painting that supposedly belonged to a dead artist, but when he looks at the painting, the emotional colors are so vivid it feels like a scream. He tracks down the forger: a homeless, penniless street artist named Bastien. Instead of turning Bastien in, Arthur hides him in his lavish apartment, demanding Bastien teach him how to paint with such raw emotion.

Everyone knows the story of Icarus. The story of how his wings melted as a cause of his ego. How he flew too close to the sun and he was warned not to. How he fell a torturous fall from shining light to utter darkness. But what they don't know is that his wings melted from the heat of his own joy, not his ego. What they don't know is that he was also warned not to fly too close to the sea below. What they don't know is that the fall was the most invigorating part. What they forget is that the wax and feathers and frames of his wings fell to the sea with him. The story emerges from the sea in new forms. Abusive fathers embody Minos. The wax is no longer wax but a family. The story of Icarus is reborn from the depths of the Underworld. But can something be reborn if it never died? "Never regret thy fall, O Icarus of the fearless flight For the greatest tragedy of them all Is to never feel the burning light." ~Oscar Wilde

Chiaroscuro is a raw and unfiltered exploration of the mind-fractured, tangled, and desperately searching for meaning. In a world that demands coherence, this collection embraces disorder, weaving together thoughts that are both heavy and fleeting, violent and tender, detached yet deeply felt. Both a mirror and a descent, it delves into the paradoxical nature of being-where morality blurs, instincts clash with restraint, and what is hidden beneath the surface threatens to unravel. A distribution of light and shadow, Chiaroscuro does not seek perfection, but balance-a mind laid bare in all its rawness and intensity, both beautiful and unrefined, both chaotic and graceful.

This poem seeks to capture the mesmerising effect of a campfire. Staring in silence is meditative, calming and transformative. When you consider the dual nature of fire; its potentially destructive power and its capabilities for supporting life, it is impossible not to feel awe.

Jason Tisse, is on a jet plane headed to to Europe, his first trip abroad. To relax he picks up an old cinema trade magazine and is shocked to find an article written by his film school mentor, Edgerton. It's a story so fantastic that Jason can't tell if the article is fact of fiction. It's whimsical tale which describes the origins of a magic Brownie Kodak camera, which strangely seems to be the very camera that Jason has stored in the overhead compartment right above his seat! Jason had planned to use the camera to document the works of his favorite painter, and when he does, the magic box of light will unleash all of the sex, violence and humor captured on canvas by the infamous artist, Caravaggio! In this excerpt from Gregory Earls' first novel, "Empire of Light," this short story is a COMPLETE short tale written by the mentor of our main character, Jason Tisse. I hope you enjoy, "The Cinematographer, the Box of Light, & Magic Hour!" Get the entire book at Amazon.com. Thanks!
