Armando Polito was born in Bovino, Italy; he came to America at the age of eight. Throughout his life he was adamant that his family remember who we are and where we came from. Upon his death, at the age of 90, I realized how different my childhood was compared to that of my friends. My father's strong will, determination, and ability to see the world through a lens of both comedy and tragedy was meant to be shared.
"My mother and father were opposites. Mom loved people, loved to talk with them, and was never at a loss of words. Outgoing, hilarious, and compassionate to a fault, she would talk to anyone about anything. She choose bold colors and constantly changed her hairstyle.
Dad was more private. He seldom stopped to talk beyond a quick "hello" or "Che she dice?" [What do you say?]" He minded his own business and preferred that others mind theirs. He was critical of "half-assed" work, and adamant about doing things the right way. Most people thought him rather quiet and reserved, and this was usually the case.
The great exception came when he was home. Around us Dad was completely different. Though he was strict, he also had a mischievous side, which came out in his quick wit and love of a good joke."
