ONC 2026 | Brynn hates snow. Which is funny, really, a cosmic joke she'd laugh at if her throat weren't so frozen she could barely form words. Every morning as the sun rises, she wakes up in a fucking-freezing forest, snowflakes landing on her cheeks and nose, and her heart skips a beat because she's back there again, on that road, and she doesn't know why. She can't remember who she was; she can't recall the faces of people in her life, neither their voices, nor their names. All she knows is that there's a path ahead of her, down along the snowy slope that stretches for miles, and no way back. So Brynn goes on. Step after step into the treacherous whiteness, until the sun begins to set behind her and the white path is hit by the worst snowfall ever. And there, alone and cold, Brynn dies. Again. And again. And again. Until one day, something... changes. The always-so-straight road forks in two, and, for the first time in an endless list of days, Brynn feels like she has a choice. She can go right, and follow the same snowy path that will lead to her being buried in snow and, well, die... Or she can go left, and walk down the green path she has never seen before. Almost - not quite; very nearly. A barely settled girl almost didn't accept a confession. An always doomed child almost left the country in time. A time-traveler almost didn't crumple the entire course of every possible parallel timeline out there when she was thirteen. The worst part about almosts is that they are the things which make you feel the guiltiest. You almost did, or you almost didn't, so what if you did? Things would have been different. Things would have even been better. ⌛︎ ❝The problem with parallel universes is that they are parallel. Always staying together, but never getting closer. Something always wrenches them apart and it's probably pure will keeping them as close as they are. Kairos wondered if she was thinking about universes anymore, as she stared at Valorie's empty eyes and at Mirio's empty seat on the former's rooftop. She almost reaches out and hugs her, because Valorie looks lifeless. Not sad, not happy, not angry, lifeless. The wind is growing mild, almost nonexistent, and uncomfortably hot, almost burning with the feeling that something is just about to shatter. Kai only hopes she has enough to weld it back together. A promise had been made, the clock had struck, their world had shattered since there weren't three pillars to hold it up, and Kairos had seen this so many times.
