The Bangalore rain was freezing, but Ruhi welcomed the chill. It distracted her from her family's suffocating neglect inside, and the sudden, agonizing pain throbbing behind her striking blue eyes.
Not tonight, she prayed, gripping the balcony railing as dizziness blurred her sight.
"You always did know how to disappear."
The deep voice made her freeze. Ruhi forced an icy mask onto her face and turned around.
Rishi stood there. The powerful King of Rajasthan looked completely undone, his intense grey eyes filled with desperation.
"I didn't disappear, Rishi," Ruhi said flatly. "Your family pushed me out, and you let them."
"I was trapped by royal duty," he rasped, stepping into the rain. "My parents, my Chacha, my Chachi... the pressure was unyielding. I am sorry."
"Your younger brother faced the same pressure," Ruhi shot back, her blue eyes flashing. "Yet he had the spine to stand by me. What was your excuse?"
Rishi flinched, completely silenced.
Ruhi looked away. He thought he was here to fix a broken heart. He had no idea she had secretly built a global business empire in New York to survive. And he had absolutely no idea about the terminal shadow growing inside her brain, ticking down her final days.
"You dethroned me," she whispered. "So I built my own kingdom."
"Then let me protect you now," Rishi pleaded, dropping all his pride. "From everyone."
A beautifully tragic smile touched her lips.
"You're too late," she whispered into the storm. "You can't protect me from the one thing that's actually going to take me away."
