He shelters his emotions because the thought of letting anyone other than Ruben in has never been an option. His mother passed away from cancer the summer before Jason's senior year of high school. The only person Jason could truly depend on was his best friend Ruben Johal who was like a brother to him for the past 10 years.

Takes place around the beginning of Twilight but I kinda ignore Bella since she doesn't move the plot along by my character knowing her.
