"Why are you doing this?" she asked, nearly choking. "You hate me."
He stepped closer.
"No," he said. "I hated that you made me feel something again. I hated how I couldn't stop thinking about you, even when I wanted to rip your throat out. I hated that you walked in here like some ghost from a past I tried to bury... and made me want to be better."
He stopped inches from her.
"So please," he said, voice breaking. "I love you. I don't know when it happened, maybe when you told me off in the dance, or maybe when you looked at me like I was worth saving."
Her lip trembled.
"Say something."
Alice looked up at him, eyes burning, voice shaking.
"I don't know how to love anyone without destroying them."
Damon reached up, brushing her hair from her face with a touch so gentle it hurt.
"Then destroy me," he said. "Just... stay."
Her breath hitched. Her whole world tilted. And in that moment-laced with stormlight and the scent of firewood and everything she was afraid of.
she kissed him like it was the end of the world
